Background
Scott DesJarlais was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in Sturgis, South Dakota. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry and psychology from the University of South Dakota in 1987 and graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine in 1991. Before entering politics, he moved to East Tennessee in 1993 to work as a general practitioner physician.
Political career
Scott DesJarlais worked as a general practitioner in East Tennessee for several years before seeking public office. A member of the Republican Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2011. He has served as the representative for Tennessee's 4th congressional district since that time.
