Background
Cleo Fields was born on November 22, 1962, and earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge. Before entering the state legislature, he founded the fundraising organization Young Adults for Positive Action in 1980. He is a practicing attorney who began his first campaign for public office while he was still a student in law school.
Political career
Cleo Fields began his political career in the Louisiana State Senate, where he served three separate tenures beginning in 1987. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993 representing Louisiana's 4th district and served two terms before an unsuccessful run for governor in 1995. After a 28-year absence from federal office, he returned to the House in January 2025 to represent the state's 6th district.
