Background
Shomari Figures was born in Mobile, Alabama, and is the son of two former Alabama state senators. He earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and history from the University of Alabama in 2006 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2010. Before his election to Congress, Figures served as a law clerk, worked on presidential campaigns, and held several federal roles, including domestic director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and deputy chief of staff to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Political career
Before entering Congress, Shomari Figures served in several federal roles, including as domestic director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office under President Barack Obama and as deputy chief of staff to Attorney General Merrick Garland. A member of the Democratic Party, he also worked as legislative counsel for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and assisted with the presidential transition of Joe Biden. Figures was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and has served as the representative from Alabama's 2nd congressional district since 2025.
