Background
Al Green was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended Florida A&M University, Howard University, and the Tuskegee Institute. He earned a Juris Doctor from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 1973. Before entering politics, he co-founded a law firm and served as the president of the Houston branch of the NAACP.

Al Green began his career in public service as a justice of the peace in Harris County, Texas, a position he held from 1977 until 2004. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005. He has represented Texas's 9th congressional district throughout his tenure in Congress.
