On June 9, 2022, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2377, the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2022, with a vote of 224 to 202. The bill’s passage in the House moved the legislation forward to the Senate for consideration. This bill, commonly referred to as a "red flag" law, would allow federal courts to issue protection orders to temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals deemed to be a danger to themselves or others. Under the legislation, family members or law enforcement officers could petition a court for these orders, and the bill also provides incentives for states to adopt similar extreme risk protection laws. The vote was largely split along party lines. The measure received support from 219 Democrats and 5 Republicans, while 201 Republicans and 1 Democrat voted against it.
