On March 18, 2021, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2021, with a vote of 228–197. This legislation establishes a process for certain undocumented individuals who entered the United States as children (often referred to as "Dreamers") to receive conditional permanent resident status and eventually apply for lawful permanent residence and citizenship. Additionally, the bill provides a path to permanent residency for individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED). The vote largely followed party lines, with all 219 voting Democrats supported by nine Republicans in favor of the measure, while 197 Republicans voted against it. Because the bill passed the House, it was sent to the Senate for further consideration.
