On Agreeing to the Resolution
On October 21, 2021, the House of Representatives voted 229–202 to pass House Resolution 730, which recommended that Stephen K. Bannon be held in criminal contempt of Congress. This resolution was a formal request for the Department of Justice to prosecute Mr. Bannon for his refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by the Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. The resolution specifically cited Mr. Bannon’s failure to produce requested documents and his refusal to appear for a deposition before the committee. By passing this measure, the House asserted its authority to compel testimony and evidence as part of its legislative oversight and investigative functions. The vote was largely divided along party lines. All 220 voting Democrats supported the measure, while 202 Republicans voted against it. Nine Republicans joined the Democratic majority to pass the resolution.
