On Motion to Suspend the Rules and Pass, as Amended
On June 23, 2022, the House of Representatives voted to pass S. 2089, the Keep Kids Fed Act of 2022, with a bipartisan majority of 376-42. Because the vote was held under a "suspension of the rules," it required a two-thirds majority to pass, a threshold it easily cleared before being sent to the President to be signed into law. The bill was designed to prevent a sudden lapse in federal funding for school meal programs as pandemic-era waivers were set to expire. Specifically, the legislation extended the Department of Agriculture’s authority to provide higher reimbursement rates to schools and daycare centers to help them manage rising food costs and supply chain disruptions. It also allowed schools to continue serving free meals to all students through the summer of 2022, regardless of family income, while transitioning back to income-based eligibility for the following school year.
