Born on November 28, 1964, Michael Bennet earned a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School after serving as an aide to the governor of Ohio. He worked as a law clerk and as counsel to the U.S. Deputy Attorney General before moving to Colorado, where he became a managing director for the Anschutz Investment Company. Prior to his time in the Senate, he served as chief of staff to the mayor of Denver and as the superintendent of Denver Public Schools.

Michael Bennet began his career in public service as an aide to Ohio Governor Richard Celeste and later served as counsel to the U.S. Deputy Attorney General during the Clinton administration. He subsequently worked as chief of staff to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and as the superintendent of Denver Public Schools before being appointed to the U.S. Senate in January 2009 to fill a vacancy.
