Richard Blumenthal is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Connecticut who previously served for 20 years as the state's attorney general.
Background
Richard Blumenthal graduated from Harvard University, where he chaired the student newspaper, before studying at Trinity College, Cambridge and earning his law degree from Yale Law School. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1970 to 1976 and held several legal roles, including serving as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun and as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Before his election to the state legislature, he worked in private law practice and provided volunteer counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Political career
Richard Blumenthal began his public service career as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut before serving in the Connecticut House of Representatives and the Connecticut Senate. He then served as the Attorney General of Connecticut for 20 years until his election to the federal legislature. A member of the Democratic Party, he was first sworn into the U.S. Senate in 2011 and was subsequently reelected in 2016 and 2022.
