Background
Lisa Blunt Rochester was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and is the first woman and first African American to represent the state in both chambers of Congress. Her early career included serving as an intern and caseworker for Tom Carper before she was appointed to leadership roles as the deputy secretary of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services and the secretary of the state's Department of Labor. In 2001, she became Delaware's state personnel director and later served as the CEO of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League.
Political career
Blunt Rochester began her career in public service as an intern and caseworker for Tom Carper before serving as Delaware's deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Social Services, secretary of the Department of Labor, and state personnel director. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and served as the representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2025. She was elected to the United States Senate in 2024 and has been serving as the junior senator from Delaware since 2025.
