Background
Born and raised in upstate New York, Kirsten Gillibrand graduated from Dartmouth College and the UCLA School of Law. She began her legal career as an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell and later became a partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner, while also serving as special counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Before her election to office, she worked on Hillary Clinton's 2000 U.S. Senate campaign and led the Women's Leadership Forum for the Democratic National Committee.
Political career
Before entering elective office, Kirsten Gillibrand served as Special Counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and worked on Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign. She was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and served from 2007 to 2009 representing New York's 20th congressional district. In 2009, she was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy and has since won a special election in 2010 and full terms in 2012, 2018, and 2024.
