On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the House of Representatives considered two measures following presidential vetoes. The House failed to override the President's veto of H.R. 131, the Manatee Protection Act of 2023, and subsequently referred the bill and veto message to the Committee on Natural Resources. Additionally, the House failed to override the presidential veto of H.R. 504, the REACT Act. Both chambers in session. On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the House passed H.R. 6938, an appropriations act for Commerce, Justice, Science, and other agencies, in a 397-28 vote. The House also passed H.R. 1834, the Breaking the Gridlock Act, by a 230-196 margin (D 213-0, R 17-196). A veto override attempt for H.R. 504 failed 236-188, falling short of the required two-thirds majority. In the Senate, Alexander C. Van Hook was confirmed as a U.S. District Judge in a 53-40 vote (D 6-39, R 46-0). Additionally, the Senate agreed 52-47 to a motion to discharge S.J.Res. 98, concerning the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities in Venezuela.
