On the Cloture Motion

On January 24, 2019, the Senate held a procedural vote on a "motion to invoke cloture," which is a move to end debate and allow a final vote on a proposal. Although a majority of senators (52–44) supported the motion, it was rejected because it failed to reach the 60-vote threshold required by Senate rules to overcome a filibuster.

The vote took place during the 2018–2019 government shutdown and focused on a Democratic-led proposal to provide temporary funding to reopen the government without including money for a border wall. The outcome meant that the Senate could not move forward with this specific plan, leaving the government shutdown in place at that time.
