On the Joint Resolution

On June 20, 2019, the Senate voted 51–45 to pass a Joint Resolution of Disapproval aimed at blocking a proposed multi-billion dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern allies. The passage of this resolution represented a formal legislative effort to prevent the executive branch from bypassing Congress to finalize the weapons deal.

The vote was primarily driven by the Democratic caucus, which voted unanimously (44–0) in favor of the resolution. While the majority of Republicans (45) voted against the measure, five Republicans joined the Democrats to provide the margin necessary for passage. Despite this result, the resolution faced a difficult path toward becoming law, as the 51-vote total fell short of the two-thirds majority required to override a potential presidential veto.
